“A trail of smoke appears, followed by a tiny object performing rolls and maneuvering strikingly quickly, as it races across the sky. This is a military aircraft.

Ever since their creation, these marvels have gracefully showed their lightning speed and tight turns, but they are not built for public spectacle. Since their debut in the Great War of 1914-1918, better known as World War I, these winged machines have changed the rules of war.  

I will be describing here their participation in the major wars of the 20th century.
